BIOGRAPHY
I was born in 1955 in Canada to parents of Eastern European origin. I graduated from medical school in 1980. I became a family physician and am Board Certified in Family Practice. I have lived in several states since moving to the US in 1997 and presently reside in Mississippi where, in addition to promoting REIU, I practice emergency medicine.
I am married to the most uncivilized person that I know, a Venezuelan named Arelys. She has been instrumental both in my personal development and in the development of REIU. We have two wonderful children from whom we have learned a great deal.
REIU evolved over the course of my experience as a family doctor and as an individual striving to self-actualize. I originally worked in a small town in Canada where I was continually presented with medical problems that had a strong behavioral or psychosomatic basis. Due to my personal fascination with this area, I attempted to address these problems to the best of my ability using what I had learned in my medical training. Out of frustration, I looked around for additional therapeutic options and in 1987 took an introductory course in hypnotherapy. There I was introduced to the unconscious mind and its tremendous resources and empowering potential. I incorporated what I learned there and invested a great deal of time and energy in learning more about behavioral change using this modality. I learned analytical hypnotherapeutic techniques and over the course of several years developed my own method that I eventually came to name Rational-Emotional Integrative Updating. By 1992 I decided to limit my practice strictly to utilizing this method and did so until 1996.
Over this time period I also made major changes within myself using the methods that I was teaching to my clients. These changes have enabled me to more closely approximate the person that I am committed to becoming and along the way have resulted in many external changes in my life.
My personal and professional changes led to me examining the history of life and that of our species in particular in order to obtain a better understanding of the problems that we face today. This examination led to the viewpoints expressed in my book, "Liberating the Caged Human Animal".
Due to the fact that my evolution led to me raising my standards, I came to realize that the true potential of REIU could only be achieved by individuals truly committed to their self-actualization. I also came to realize that there are relatively few such individuals to be found in the world. I decided, however, to limit my practice to only such people, and as a result returned to standard medical practice in order to make a living for myself.
I decided to write my book in order to make REIU more easily accessible for the few that might be interested in such a challenging agenda. I have created this website in order to disseminate this information as broadly as possible in order to try to connect with these individuals.
While I am not optimistic about our species' future, I believe that unless those who care about and love life do something about the disaster that we have created there is no hope at all. Furthermore, even if we should turn out to be doomed, striving for freedom and self-actualization are the only way that a living thing can become alive within its life.
At any event, I do not believe that our species will be so efficient in its anti-life agenda to destroy all life on this planet and so, even if we eliminate ourselves, life in some form will go on, obeying the laws of nature as it ultimately always does. It is simply up to us to see if "the wise man" (the literal meaning of our species' name - homo sapiens) will be wise enough to continue to be part of the process. Time will tell.
